Chinese fan dancing dates back 2,000 years, with formalized Chinese dance dating back to the 4th millennium BC. Over the centuries, folk and formal classical fan dances have developed that highlight a variety of fans, from the ornate silk and paper fans to the heavier fighting fans. In contemporary choreographies, elements of classical Chinese dance and the use of silk demij-fans are combined with elements of lyrical jazz and ballet to produce spellbinding group and individual performances. Over the past six years, I have taken my inspiration for developing my silk fan and belly dance fusion skills from these mesmerizing performances, from local Chinese dancers, and from my readings.
In the DVD, I cover a variety of fan fusion concepts and techniques. The DVD is organized to suit a variety of learning styles and levels. For beginners, the introduction explains basic hand grasps and fan movements. For silk fan/bellydance fusion artists with a little more experience, I provide concepts to explore and combinations to help with that exploration. For dancers who are confident with their fans and ready for a bigger challenge, all the combinations may be strung together into a 5-minute choreography to be polished and brought to life on the stage!
All combinations as well as the full choreography are depicted from both front and back views.

Just took the first half of my Dancing For Birth training workshop today. It was incredible! It was so empowering to be gaining so much knowledge about the physiology of birth and how dance can play such a vital role in reducing pain and increasing a more heathful delivery and postpartum recovery.

Prenatal/Postpartum Bellydance with Mirabai
In class, we'll strengthen and prepare our bodies for childbirth and postpartum recovery. Class will consist of a gentle cardio and yoga warm-up and then move onto strengthening exercises proven to help ease some women through labor and quicken recovery. Then we'll move onto the bellydance portion of the class where we'll learn and practice safe prenatal bellydance movements. We'll end with a gentle cool down. Throughout the course, I'll share what I know of the movements we practice, such as their origination and purpose in birthing.

Close One Door...
Many times it has been a fight, and had it been up to me those doors would have stayed open, damnit. But... oh, there they go. Shut. Take a deep breath. Regroup. And suddenly another door has opened, and soon life is a whirlwind of too many projects, activities, dates, travel plans, you name it. And it's a blast!
Other times, it just comes time to shut a door. A project has come to its close. Too many projects on the table, and so some just have to be closed, the timing is right.
And this is what my life patterns have taught me as of late. It is important to listen carefully to the creek of those doors ... listen for those that need to be closed, and don't fear closing them, because there are yet many fabulous doors to open!
What doors have I closed recently? I totally reduced my shows and performance dates so I could have a deeply needed breather. I decided I would stick to two activities ... teaching at Abyssinian Dance Studio (http://www.abydance.com/) and dancing once a month at Sabrina's... then Spiritus (http://www.tattooedpsychic.com/) came along... and suddenly, again, I am amid a whirlwind of dates and activities! I have a growing group of fabulous students visiting me for private instruction, several classes a week at Aby Studio, a DVD in production, and tour dates to travel and promote my fan fusion instruction and more!!
While I have loved being a regular performer at a number of Seattle's Middle Eastern restaurants, this transition to a schedule more heavily riddled with teaching engagements has been exactly what my soul was needing. And in the meantime, I get to focus on creating the next spell-binding show for Spiritus!
